Story Synopsis:
Flying high over the "Dark Blue World," Franta (Vetchy), a lieutenant in the Czech Air Force, is assigned to mentor and tame Karel (Hadek), a young pilot (read Tom Cruise in Top Gun), that is, until those persistent Nazis invade their homeland. Escaping to England to fly for RAF, and after learning a bit of English from a not-too-friendly schoolmarm, they crash land in France and are taken in by Susan (Fitzgerald), a lonely wife whose husband is off to sea, who offers more than just refuge and food. However, at the end of the war, both men and others who fled to England, find themselves enemies of the state. (PR)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced DVD, framed at 2.40:1, exhibits a pleasing picture, with images that are sharp and nicely detailed. The color palette exhibits complementary saturation for the period of the movie; a little bit dim, but well balanced. Fleshtones appear accurate, and blacks are deep and solid. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered. There is some edge enhancement noticed, as well as pixelization. The source element is revealing of minor dirt, artifacts, and film grain. DVD-ROM Review:
After inserting the disc for Dark Blue World, a small little Autorun window will pop up, asking you to click a button to view the film's Web site. If you choose to enter this site, a new window will be created, showing you the main menu. In this Web site, you can find a huge collection of data on the film, including cast and crew biographies, as well as information about the time period this film is set in. Still images from the mjovie, as well as of the airplane the movie is based on, can also be found in the assortment of links garbled together for this site. I was not too disappointed with this title's features, because I did not have any thoughts on the title to begin with. When Dark Blue World somehow appeared on my desk, I felt neither excitement nor remorse. Perhaps I should just stick this in a Mediocre category. Then again, it was pretty bad. (Dann Richelieu) |
