Story Synopsis:
In "Baran," Latif (Abedini) is a young, carefree Iranian working at a construction site. He entertains his fellow workers and, much to their dismay, makes the tea for them to drink. When an Afghan co-worker has a fall and breaks his leg, the man sends his teenage son Rahmat (Naji) to take his place. Rahmat is no worker, but makes a mean cup of tea, and is soon in charge of brewing the stuff, while Latif has to start actually doing manual labor! At first upset, Latif finds himself drawn to the young man, and when he discovers the secret the boy has been keeping, both of their lives are changed forever. Winner of Best Film at the Montreal Film Festival. (Tricia Littrell)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a nicely photographed picture with image quality that is quite satisfying for the storytelling. Images are quite sharp and detailed, though some minor smearing is noticed on occasion. Colors are generally well balanced, but with a slightly muted quality. The source element is revealing of film grain and occasional artifacts and scratches. Edge enhancement can be a problem with higher contrast scenes, and there is some apparent pixelization as well.
