DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD exhibits a picture that looks somewhat dated, but also delivers a color scheme that is complementary to the 1800s setting of the film. Images can be soft and smeared in some scenes, while other times revealing of fine textures and facial details. Interior scenes are appropriately dim, lit only by natural light and candle light. Viewing in a completely blackened room is recommended, so as not to detract from available visual information in the darker scenes. Edge enhancement can be quite bothersome in the higher contrast scenes, and pixelization breaks up finer details at times. Some film grain and dirt is noticed in the source element. (Suzanne Hodges)
