Story Synopsis:
From The Great Hall Of The People, "The Music Of Andrew Lloyd Webber - Live In Beijing" (DVD cover title: "Andrew Lloyd Webber: Masterpiece") brings acclaimed performances from internationally acclaimed productions to China. Highlights from Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Cats, The Phantom Of The Opera, and Evita are included. (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD exhibits a satisfying visual experience for this stage performance, offering images that are generally sharp, overall. While finer details and definition can be limited, and some shots (depending on the camera) appear somewhat smeared, visual information is pleasing. The orchestra is apparently situated under green lighting, so blacks and fleshtones often have a greenish tinge, but the performers on stage look natural. Pixelization, shimmering details, and aliasing problems can all be negative factors with this picture. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The 5.1 sonic presentations both provide for a pleasing sense of dimension throughout, with comparatively moderate surround envelopment. Recording quality can be characterized as rather good, though not exemplary. Deep bass is only somewhat noticeable for this audio presentation, and the .1 LFE does not seem to be a factor. The vocals span all three front channels. The DTS Digital Surround version is preferred for its slightly more refined sounding midrange, a bit greater sense of spatial depth and coherence, and a little more definition with low frequencies.
