    Story Synopsis:
    At "Thirteen," Tracy (Wood) is a good girl who loves her mama (a Tom Petty lyric?) and is an excellent student...but she desperately wants to fit in with Evie (Reed), the most popular girl in school. But befriending Evie takes Tracy on a downward spiral into a darker side of being a teen with casual sex, drugs, and petty theft in only a few short months. Tracy

    DVD Picture:
    With first-time director Catherine Hardwicke coming from a career in production design ("Vanilla Sky," "Three Kings") and cinematographer Elliot Davis ("Get On The Bus," "I Am Sam") bringing his handheld camerawork to the table, "Thirteen" is certainly a stylized picture. The images have an in-your-face quality with dizzying handheld camerawork that supports the shocking storytelling. Colors are nicely balanced, with natural fleshtones, bright hues, and deep blacks. There are many scenes in which the picture is awash in certain hues to contribute to the mood of the scene, while desaturation plays a part when things go bad for the main character toward the end of the film. Some grain is inherent in the source element, but again, adding complementary texture to the picture. Pixelization and edge enhancement are occasionally noticed. The anamorphically enhanced DVD is framed at 1.85:1. (Suzanne Hodges) The disc also includes a modified 1.33:1 (4:3) full screen version of the movie -- not reviewed.
