Story Synopsis:
The Leopard (Il Gattopardo), based on the novel by Giuseppe Tomasi Di Lampedusa, is Luchino Visconti
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.21:1 DVD picture can look quite pleasing, though dated characteristics are inherent. (A 2.35:1-framed version of the shortened American release is available on Disc Three.) The color palette is a bit subdued, with brownish fleshtones and deep, but undefined blacks. Many exterior scenes appear slightly washed out. Sharpness and detail varies, with some scenes offering satisfying textures and others appearing undefined or somewhat smeared. The source element is revealing of flickering brightness, as well as flecks of dirt and artifacts, but overall the picture is quite clean due to an extensive restoration. Edge enhancement can be a problem with this title. (Suzanne Hodges)
