Story Synopsis:
In 1912 Philadelphia, women didn't have the right to do much of anything. Activist Alice Paul (Swank) was determined to do something about that, so she and her good friend Lucy Burns (O'Connor) set out to make a change to the American constitution. While on a hunger strike, the girls won the title of Iron Jawed Angels and with their refusal to give in to opposition, finally on August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote became constitutional law. Alice continued to fight for women's rights throughout her entire life up until she died in 1977. (Tricia Littrell)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced DVD picture is beautifully saturated in a well balanced color palette. Fleshtones are accurately rendered, reds and blues are richly saturated, and blacks are generally deep. Some scenes are extremely desaturated with a gritty appearance to somewhat resemble old newsreels, though a tinge of reds and blues remain to add patriotic hues. The picture is sharp and nicely detailed, with some scenes appearing softly focused if only for mood. Edge enhancement is not a problem, but there is some pixelization noticed. (Suzanne Hodges)
