Story Synopsis:
Several top musical groups (including Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and The Band) boarded a train with a camera crew in 1970, and made several stops in Canada for a multi-part rock festival known as Festival Express. Not only is concert footage from the stops included, but there is also documentation of the goings-on aboard the train and interviews (past and present). (Suzanne Hodges)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD picture exhibits imagery that varies depending on the source element. Much of the 16mm-originated images are, expectedly, gritty and grainy, but the interview segments are clean and solid. The color scheme for the concert and on-train footage often delivers the nostalgic visuals with a slightly washed-out appearance that can otherwise appear nicely balanced. Source element artifacts are also noticed throughout, including serious scratches and plenty of dirt. Still, the picture quality is typical for a documentary and does a fine job of delivering the visuals. (Suzanne Hodges)
