    Story Synopsis:
    The Big Red One is writer/director Samuel Fuller

    DVD Picture:
    With seamlessly added scenes and a transfer similar to the previously released 1.78:1 DVD, this new Reconstruction edition of The Big Red One is quite impressive. Certainly the picture has dated characteristics, namely film grain and gritty emulsion that is inherent in the source element, but artifacts, scratches, and film grain have certainly been cleaned up. Colors are nicely rendered, with accurate fleshtones, natural hues, and generally deep blacks. Some smearing is evident, with a lack of definition. Still, images are sharp and detailed with nicely rendered shadow delineation and contrast. Same scene comparisons between the two DVDs reveal subtle improvements, if any, on this new version. Occasional pixelization is apparent, but edge enhancement is limited. (Suzanne Hodges)
