Story Synopsis:
Which is worse: To marry when not in love or to ask for a hand when you know that the love is not returned? This is just one of many struggles that Kitty (Watts) must face while on a medical mission in remote Shanghai with her husband, Dr. Walter Fane (Norton). Well, then there's the issue of infidelity. Yet when all seems lost in this 1925 period piece, the human spirit never ceases to amaze. The Painted Veil is based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham. (Jack Kelley)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.38:1 DVD can often look rather flat and wanting in clarity, especially in medium and long shots, which are also plagued with compression artifacts and pixel breakup. Black levels are deep, and the entire presentation has a very dark appearance that matches the story. Edge enhancement can be noticed throughout, but is not overly distracting. (Danny Richelieu)
