DVD Picture:
The non-anamorphic DVD is a recycled transfer, exhibiting a picture that is only slightly improved over the LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 31. Colors are a bit more refined, with slightly deeper blacks. Sharpness and clarity also exhibit slight improvements, for a picture that is a bit more solid. Viewed alone, the images are undefined, with edge enhancement that can be quite distracting. The picture is not very solid, with apparent pixelization and perceived film grain. Shadow delineation is poor, with visual information lost in the darker scenes, especially due to the already dark character of the film. Aliasing problems are noticed, as well as some shimmering artifacts. (Suzanne Hodges)
