DVD Picture:
The black-and-white anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD picture exhibits images that are wanting in sharpness and fine detail. Compared to the LaserDisc reviewed in Issue 31, contrast is improved and black levels are much deeper. The gray scale is nicely rendered with deep blacks, but definition gets lost in the darkness. Film grain is excessively perceived, and occasional source element artifacts are detected. Slight edge enhancement is noticed.
