    Story Synopsis:
    The year after the end of World War II, Stalin announced that any Russians exiles would be welcomed back into the Soviet Union. Among the thousands who chose to return were a young Russian doctor (Menchikov), his French wife Marie (Bonnaire), and their young son, Sergi. Only The Motherland is not at all as it once was, and while her husband becomes accustomed to the new system, Marie is frightened and unhappy and her desire to leave the Soviet Union grows stronger every day. There may be hope with the help of Gabrielle (Deneuve), a French actress, but will she leave her husband and son behind? East/West is an engrossing film that was a nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar

    DVD Picture:
    The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a good picture, with hues that are often neutral and nicely balanced. Browns are the predominant shade throughout. Images are sharp, but backgrounds are often a bit hazy and lacking fine definition. Edge enhancement is evident, causing some distraction on occasion. The picture is not very solid, with some scenes appearing "digital" and pixelized. Fine film grain is revealed. Overall, the picture is not impressive, but does sometimes look very nice.
