DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a stylized picture with many filtered scenes that appear soft and hazy. Other scenes exhibit bold colors with fine detail and definition. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered, with good visual information in the darker scenes. Fine film grain and minor artifacts are revealed throughout. Some edge enhancement is noticed, as is pixelization. Though some may be bothered by the soft character, overall the picture quality is excellent.

After installing the PCFriendly compatible DVD-ROM components for this title, you are brought to the main menu, which has links for Story, Cast and Filmmakers, Behind the Scenes, Features, Soundtrack, and the Initiation. The Story section is very simple: large white fonts on an all black background, with a few pictures thrown in as well. It is two pages long, and goes extremely deep into the story behind the film, actually almost telling the entire thing. Biographies for eight of the main cast and nine of the crew can be found in the Cast and Filmmakers section. This has the same presentation as the Story, and each biography briefly goes into each person's career including movies and television shows they have been in. A four-page essay on what happened Behind the Scenes can be found in the section named accordingly. The same large white font over a black background is used, and each of the four pages is not very long. Everything is explained in this section, from where the idea came up to how they selected their cast. In the Features section, you can find everything available to the DVD-Video users, plus 13 extra photos. When you click on these photos, they are opened in a window of your default Web browser, and can be printed by right clicking on the window. A listing of the songs included on the soundtrack for The Skulls can be found in the Soundtrack section. Again, this section is presented in the same way as the other sections of the components for this title. There are no links for clips from the songs, or links to go online to purchase the compact disc. The Initiation section is just a link to the original theatrical Web site for The Skulls. You must have an Internet connection established to see the Web site. Playing the movie from the PCFriendly software takes you straight to the DVD-Video main menu, which works well using your mouse. Everything included in this title is done okay, but nothing is really spectacular. It has the bare basics, but does not even contain a script. I am pretty disappointed with this title, but what can you do really. (Danny Richelieu)
