Story Synopsis:
Deservedly bestowed with Academy Awards
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 picture exhibits beautiful imagery, with rich, fully saturated colors, well-balanced fleshtones and deep, endless blacks. The gorgeous bold hues show no sign of chroma noise. On occasion, colors border oversaturation, but hues are mostly quite natural. Images are sharp, with excellent detail into facial details and embroidery on the costumes. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely balanced, with visual information available in even the darkest scenes. The picture is smooth, and beautifully renders the fantastic and at times wonderfully dizzying cinematography. There is a hint of edge enhancement at times, but the distraction is not always present. Minor source element artifacts are scattered sporadically throughout, but are never terribly bothersome. (Suzanne Hodges)
