Story Synopsis:
Pat Morita returns as Mr. Miyagi in the latest sequel to the Karate Kid series, The Next Karate Kid. This time the new Karate student is a rebellious teenage girl named Julie (Swank). Julie is counseled by Mr. Miyagi and three Buddhist Monks, and grows to adulthood from adolescence while kicking-butt on a gang of military students who control the other kids at her high school. DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits pleasing quality throughout. Images are sharp and detailed, though some scenes are wanting in finer definition. Colors are rich and naturally balanced, with accurate fleshtones, and deep blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are nicely rendered throughout. There is a bit of edge enhancement noticed, but pixelization is not a factor. The picture is quite solid and clean, with a few source element artifacts. While the LaserDisc (Issue 13) earned a reference score, the DVD is unquestionably preferred for its more refined colors and sharper images. (Suzanne Hodges)
