MGM has re-issued The Princess Bride as a Special Edition, upgrading it with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer and a host of extras, most notably Jeffrey Schwarz
Story Synopsis:
With an equal amount of comedy, fantasy, action, adventure and romance, The Princess Bride delivers classic entertainment that can truly be enjoyed ay all ages (and sexes as well). It is the story of the beautiful Princess Buttercup (Wright) and her one true love Westley (Elwes). Believing he was murdered by pirates, Buttercup is astonished when he returns to save her from a band of thieves and the evil Prince Humperdinck (Sarandon). Based on William Goldman
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD picture exhibits subtle improvements over the previously released, non-anamorphic version reviewed in Issue 41. Colors are more refined, for a more naturally balanced color scheme. While the previous version appeared slightly oversaturated, especially in fleshtones, this new version exhibits well-balanced colors, with accurate fleshtones and deep blacks. Images are generally sharp, with good detail, though finer details can appear somewhat smeared at times. Of course, there is the occasionally softly focused scene. There is some edge enhancement apparent. The source element is revealing of dirt, artifacts, and film grain, but for its age, the picture looks quite pleasing. (Suzanne Hodges)
