    Story Synopsis:
    Gentlemen, start your engines...er, DVD players! Super Speedway puts you in the driver

    DVD Picture:
    Reframed in 1.85:1 from its original IMAX large format presentation, this anamorphically enhanced DVD picture looks great, with images that are sharp and crisp, with excellent contrast and shadow delineation. Colors are naturally balanced, with accurate fleshtones, rich hues, and deep blacks. There is some minor pixelization noticed, but otherwise there are no distractions for a picture that should be very satisfying. On larger home theatre displays, viewers should find the scenes shot from atop a racecar to be exhilarating. (Suzanne Hodges) The DVD also includes a 1.33:1 version (not reviewed).

    Soundtrack:
    The 5.1-channel soundtracks are excellent examples of the use of surround sound to its full potential. Of course, this is in reference to the settings at the raceway, with directional creativity and sound design in the rendering and spatial placement of racecar engines. Back surround decoding should certainly be a benefit in enhancing the perception of space behind the listener. Dynamic range utilization is incredible at times, and caution should be exercised in terms of volume setting, as the sheer loudness of this soundtrack is likely to challenge your system, and your ears as well. Also likely to be a challenge is the extent of deep bass output, which, along with aggressive .1 LFE activity, will deliver prodigious amounts of sub-25 Hz extension, even in the surrounds. Fidelity overall is excellent, and the narrative has a relaxed, comfortable-sounding presence. The dialogue sounds natural, with compelling spatial integration. The non-racetrack settings feature a nicely spacious and enveloping soundstage presence, with subtle yet effective atmospheric effects. The DTS

    In addition to Widescreen Review, I subscribe to several audio/video publications, such as Sound And Vision, Stereophile, Stereophile Guide To Home Theater, Audio Video Interiors, and peruse through the myriad of British audio video publications when I go to Borders, Barnes & Nobles, or Tower Records.
