    20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has delivered another first-rate entry in their Five Star DVD Collection. For those of you who enjoy documentaries, you will thoroughly enjoy this disc as there is not one, not two, not three, but four documentaries and featurettes, ranging in length from 24 minutes to 44 minutes. The two-disc Five Star Collection edition includes a wealth of worthwhile extras. Disc One includes a Robert Altman audio commentary (informative, though there are frequent passages of silence) and a thorough 24-minute American Movies Classics

    Story Synopsis:
    M*A*S*H is the hilarious war comedy exploring the lives of Korean War doctors and nurses. This hip anit-war movie was the third most popular film of 1970 and was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Who doesn

    DVD Picture:
    The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 DVD picture looks dated, with many soft and hazy images, but detail can also be quite satisfying. Colors have an intentionally desaturated appearance, but hues are solid and well balanced. There are very few artifacts noticed from the source elements. There is no obtrusive edge enhancement, and pixelization is infrequently detected. The football game at the end of the movie is quite colorful, with rich red and bold blue uniforms. Considering what has been available for M*A*S*H, fans should be delighted with the picture. There is a supplement on Disc Two that addresses the restoration of M*A*S*H. Since there were no acceptable existing elements to use for picture quality, the restoration team created a new negative from the color separation masters and then color timed the new negative to match the original desaturated look of the movie (with the exception of the more colorful football game).     I read WSR for the articles—honest. Terry Paullin's industry insight is refreshing and lively. The lack of comparisons of which home theatre-in-a-box is best or which sub $200 DVD player is best leaves more room for in-depth product and movie reviews. Most importantly, though, I read WSR for the caricature of Gary Reber morphed on to the movie featured on the cover in the Editor's Couch page. Pierce Brosnan had better watch out!
