"Boy Erased" is the story of Jared Eamons (Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who must overcome the fallout of being outed to his parents (Kidman and Crowe). His parents struggle with reconciling their love for their son with their beliefs. Fearing a loss of family, friends and community, Jared is pressured into attending a conversion therapy program. While there, Jared comes into conflict with its leader (Edgerton) and begins his journey to finding his own voice and accepting his true self. (Gary Reber)

The 1.85:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, upconverted to 2160p with greater resolution and luminance, was photographed digitally using the Arri Alexa Mini and Arricam LT camera systems in Super 35 and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. The imagery appears generally soft except for focused close-ups, and even then sharpness is still wanting. The softness appears to be intentional. The color palette is naturally hued with no exaggerations. Fleshtones appear accurate throughout. Contrast is well balanced with solid black levels, but shadows are defocused so there is little delineation. Overall, this is satisfying but not stellar. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is dialogue focused with good spatial integration. The orchestral score is nicely recorded and extends from a wide soundstage to the surrounds with a strong envelopment presence. Atmospherics are realistic and occupy the frontal soundstage. Sound effects are limited. Foley sound effects are excellent. Overall, the soundtrack is effective and competent and complementary to the story and its dialogue focus. (Gary Reber)
