Ghostbusters II 4K Ultra HD

The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD HDR10 picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, was photographed on Eastman film stock with the Panavision Panaflex Gold camera in anamorphic Panavision® and sourced from a 4K remastered Digital Intermediate format from the original camera negative. This new remastered edition of "Ghostbusters II" delivers excellent sharpness and detail as well as color fidelity. Film grain has been eliminated, which enhances clarity throughout. This is a wonderfully comic picture that looks great. Color fidelity is excellent with accurate fleshtones, hues that are vividly rendered with strong primaries that pop, and blobs of pastel ghosts and their swirling psychedelic trails. The Statue of Liberty is rendered in stone green and the slime river and cloud are pink. The imagery is also bright with eye-catching intensity. Contrast is excellent as blacks are deep with revealing shadow delineation and bright accents that pop. Resolution is terrific with fine textural imagery, as well as revealing detail in costumes and "Ghostbuster" equipment, such as the familiar air cannons and the ECTO-1A white converted ambulance. Facial features also are nicely defined and resolved. Visual effects, while often comedic, such as laser gun projections, the slime, and the Statue of Liberty are finely resolved. WOW! segments appear in the ending scenes such as from 01:22:57 to 01:23:44, 01:26:26 to 01:28:47, 01:31:04 to 0:32:34 and 01:36:18 to 01:38:10. As with the original "Ghostbusters," this sequel is an engaging and comedic visual experience throughout. This new remastered version will thrill fans. (Gary Reber)

The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack has been repurposed from the original sound elements. As in the original "Ghostbusters,"the sonics are terrific, even more so, especially the sound effects associated with ghosts and their destructive behavior, and the laser cannons that capture them. The music is exciting and uptempo, always effectively enveloping and extending wide and deep across the soundstage and the surrounds. Underground tunnel scenes are nicely ambient sounding with ghosts and trains present, excited with powerful bass. Deep bass occurs elsewhere, and energy extends to sub-25 Hz frequencies. The scenes of Lord Vigo's spirit is particularly ambient sounding. As the film progresses, the sound effects become more prominent and powerful, expanding throughout the soundfield with the slime and ghosts becoming more powerful, creating pandemonium. Atmospherics nicely accommodate the antics and enhance the realism of the city's locations. Dialogue is intelligible throughout with generally good spatial integration.

The Immersive Sound element primarily is comprised of Elmer Bernstein's music score. Other here-and-there sounds include city street sounds, laboratory ambience, painting restoration room ambience, the loud Vigo spirit reverberant voice, a tunnel with slime sounds and reverberant dialogue, explosions, ruckus in the courtroom with ghosts attacking the judge and prosecutor, laser cannon blasts throughout, a toaster bouncing, museum reverberant ambience, fire being extinguished, voices and dialogue in an underground tunnel with a fast-moving locomotive pulled train, a bubbling slime river, wind, flying paper, slime cloud rumbling, shooting slime on the Statue, a glass dome shattering, a rigging crash and other minor sound effects, all of which create a good sense of spherical dimensionality.

As with the original "Ghostbusters," this sequel is a fun holosonic® spherical surround soundtrack that will thrill fans. (Gary Reber)
