In "The Good Liar," consummate con man Roy Courtnay (McKellen) has set his sights on his latest mark: the recently widowed Betty McLeish (Mirren), worth millions. And Roy means to take it all. From their very first meeting, Roy begins playing Betty with his tried and true manipulations, and Betty, who seems quite taken with him, is soon going along for the ride. But this time, what should have been a simple swindle escalates into a cat-and-mouse game with the ultimate stakes––revealing more insidious deceptions that will take them both through a minefield of danger, intrigue and betrayal. The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, upconverted to 2160p with greater resolution and luminance, was photographed digitally using the Arri Alexa XT Plus camera system and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. Picture quality is superb with a rich and warm color palette. Hue saturation is naturally hued throughout. Primaries are strong and at times colors pop, especially reds. Fleshtones are naturally rendered under various lighting conditions, Contrast is well balanced with natural black levels, revealing shadow delineation, and dramatic lighting. Resolution is excellent, whether during interior or outdoor settings, whether in overcast daytime or nighttime conditions. Facial features are especially revealing of lines, skin pores, hair, beards and mustaches. Clothing and object textures are revealing as well, for satisfying realism. This is a wonderful visual experience that is compelling throughout. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack features a wonderfully dynamic orchestral score that occupies the soundfield with a wide and deep soundstage presence. The musical instrumentation and spatial dimensionality is impressive. Atmospherics define the various settings, especially in the urban settings. Sound effects engage during scenes of violence with accentuated bass. Of course, dialogue is the primary sound element here and its spatial integration is excellent. This is a very satisfying and compelling holosonic® soundtrack with natural fidelity and an impressive orchestral score. (Gary Reber)
