Jonah Hex

A scarred drifter and bounty hunter of last resort, "Jonah Hex" (Brolin) is a stoic, battle-hardened gunslinger who can track down anyone... and anything. Having survived death, Jonah's violent history is steeped in myth and legend, and has left him with one foot in the natural world and one on the "other side." A man fated to wander alone, his sole human connection is with Lilah (Fox), whose life in a brothel has left her with scars of her own. Jonah's past is about to catch up with him when the U.S. military approaches Jonah with an offer he can't refuse, one that will grant him freedom from the warrants on his head. He soon begins to track down and stop the sinister terrorist Quentin Turnbull (Malkovich), who is gathering an army and preparing to unleash Hell. The 1080p VC-1 picture is engaging throughout, with a hot color palette pushed to extremes, with an edgy appearance. Colors are rich and warm, with at times, vibrant hues, but with intended distortions that heighten the grittiness. Fleshtones are pushed to sepia overtones, yet appear naturally hued for the most part. Contrast is excellent with deep, solid blacks and revealing shadow delineation. The drawn sequences look wonderful. Resolution is excellent as well, with fine textures and facial features nicely delineated and revealing. Visual extremes are purposeful and provide the intended stylization with its inconsistencies. Still, the imagery is always engaging and at times exciting. There is no visual boredom. On the contrary, the visuals are intriguing and sure to please. A dark viewing environment, preferably a black room, is recommended for optimal viewing, using a display with excellent native contrast ratio performance, as numerous scenes are dimly lit and dark. The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is wonderfully active, utilizing all the channel capabilities, to create an intense holosonic® soundfield experience. SPL levels are often at maximum energy, and the .1 LFE channel provides a deep, solid sub-25 Hz foundation throughout, often at system-threatening levels. This enhances the effects, particularly shotgun blasts and explosions, for exciting sonic eruption. The sound is over-the-top aggressive, which is adrenaline stimulating. Dialogue is pushed to loud levels, in order to stay on top of the other aggressive sound elements, and remains remarkably intelligible and even spatially integrated. The music score is well recorded, with a wide and deep soundfield. The soundfield uses an extensive amount of phantom imaging, rather than directional sound effects, to present a consistent enveloping sound pressure level. While the sound is immersive, the attention is focused on the fontal channels, which deliver quite a sonic punch at times. Subtle ambiances are not the forte here. Instead, pure raw sound power and deeply energized bass conquer. Overall, the effect is engaging and exciting, but loud and unsophisticated. (Gary Reber)
