The 1080p AVC picture exhibits a darkly, edgy character with densely saturated colors. Strong vivid greens spotted with wood-hued browns predominate in the jungle scenes. The humans are darkly cast as figures darting against the jungle-infested background. While stylized, the picture manages to convey a "natural" visual quality. Fleshtones are darkly hued, due to heavy amounts of grit. Resolution is generally excellent, especially during close-ups of facial features and object textures. Blacks are deep and shadow delineation is generally good, but at times weak in detail. At times the imagery is extremely dark, and a darkened environment is recommended, with a capable display that can resolve extreme black levels and dark shadow resolution. Some of the visual effects are visually engaging, with vivid hues and lighting effects that intensify the visual engagements. The picture is true to the Predator franchise and is sure to please fans with its engaging imagery. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is strongly weighted in the lower-frequency spectrum, with a strong .1 LFE foundation that extends to sub-25 Hz frequencies, for dramatic visceral impact. The orchestral score is sweeping and recorded well, with a wide and deep soundstage that is aggressively enveloping in the surrounds, for an impressive holosonic® presence. Atmospheric effects fill the soundfield, often with directionalized sounds in the surrounds and frontal channels, including the signature hauntingly creepy alien Predator "purring" sounds. Gunfire and explosive blasts are intense and powerfully effective. Dialogue manages to stay above the SPL intensities and remain intelligible, though, poorly integrated spatially and forward sounding. The intense music score really is the strong suit of this presentation, never relaxing the mysterious on-the-edge mood. This is a powerfully engaging soundtrack and one-of-a-kind sonics that define fear and suspense. (Gary Reber)
