Reminiscence

In "Reminiscence," Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman), a private investigator of the mind, navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami Coast, his life is forever changed when he takes on a new client, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson). A simple matter of lost and found becomes a dangerous obsession. As Bannister fights to find the truth about Mar's disappearance, he uncovers a violent conspiracy and must ultimately answer the question: how far would you go to hold on to the ones you love? The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, upconverted to 2160p with greater resolution and luminance, was photographed digitally in anamorphic Scope using the Arri Alexa Mini and Sony CineAlta Venice camera systems and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. A 4K Ultra HD edition was released but not provided for review. The picture exhibits an overall dark appearance with a tendency toward grittiness. The color palette is generally natural with accurate fleshiness. Hues generally exhibit a dark spectrum, such as dark blues and greens. The imagery brightens up with Mae's dresses hued in reds and oranges. Otherwise, the imagery is unremarkable. Contrast favors the darker end of the spectrum of black levels and shadows. Highlights are comprised of spotty white lighting and overcast skies. Resolution is a bit soft but finer detail appears at times, especially during closeups. This is a stylistic picture with a visual flow that casts a suspenseful mystery. (Gary Reber)

The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is quite dynamic with constant activity in all channels. The soundstage exhibits excellent stereo separation that is evident with atmospherics and the orchestral score. The music extends to the four surrounds and to the height layer. Deep bass is at times powerful with low-frequency extension that provides a solid foundation. Foley sound effects enhance the realism of the production design settings. Dialogue is intelligible throughout with good spatial integration. Narration is nicely positioned.

The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an extension of the music, some dialogue and Foley sound effects during reminiscence segments and periodically during other scenes, wind, bird twerps, din ambient sounds, gunshots, water bubbles, and other minor elements. This is a very effective height layer that enhances spatial dimensionality.
