"Cry Macho" is the story of Mike Milo (Clint Eastwood), a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder, who in 1979 takes a job from an ex-boss (Dwight Yoakam) to bring the man's young son (Eduardo Minett) home from Mexico. Forced to take the backroads on their way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey during which the world-weary horseman finds an unexpected connection and his own sense of redemption. The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, upconverted to 2160p with greater
resolution and luminance, was photographed digitally in
anamorphic Panavision® and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. Picture quality is excellent with very natural imagery. The color palette exhibits rich and warm hues set against earthy settings in Mexico (actually shot in New Mexico). Fleshtones appear realistic throughout. Contrast is generally good with a natural balance throughout rendered in realistic black levels, shadows and light, with most scenes in daylight in the desert and a small Mexican town. Resolution is excellent across all the visuals. This is a pleasant and satisfying visual experience rendered simply. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is dialogue focused and mostly ADR produced but generally convincingly integrated. Atmospherics capture realistic settings, and sound effects enhance the limited action sequences. Foley is perfectly synced. Mark Mancina's music is mostly a small affair with piano, guitar, bass and limited percussion, along with occasional Mexican traditional faire and the end credits' cowboy song. Overall, this is a pleasing soundtrack experience. (Gary Reber)
