The 2.39:1 1080p AVC 4K Ultra HD HDR10 picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, upconverted to 2160p with greater resolution and luminance, was photographed on film in anamorphic Panavision® using the Panavision Panaflex Gold camera system and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. Film grain is very fine and unobjectionable. Color fidelity is excellent with fine hue shading captured in the filming. Hues are warm and rich and exhibit natural saturation. Flesh tones are perfectly natural, HDR contrast is excellent with dynamic black levels, revealing shadows and non-exaggerated natural white levels. Resolution appears a bit soft in outdoor scenes but otherwise the imager is sharp. Facial features such as lines, skin pores, skin pores and hair during closeups reveal fine detail. Clothing and object texture is revealing as well of fine detail. This is fantastic presentation of a motion picture classic. (Gary Reber)
The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding throughout with a wonderfully driving orchestral score by Ennio Morricone and a sweeping presence across the soundstage and through the surrounds. Atmospherics enhance the realism of the locations and set designs. Sound effects are strong and with impact. Foley sound effects also enhance realism. Deep bass is extended at times to sub-25 Hz frequencies as a foundation of the orchestral score. Dialogue is intelligible with generally good spatial integration.
The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an aggressive extension of the orchestral score. Atmospherics and sound effects are strong elements and include street sounds, an explosion, some extensions of dialogue, street din, train whistle, nuanced office din, gunfire, galloping horses, hand grenade rolling on roof, baby crying, carriage rolling down steep steps, man screaming, a crash and other repurposed elements from the ear-level presentation that result in height layer effectiveness.
This is a nicely crafted holosonic® spherical surround repurposed soundtrack with good fidelity, dimensionality and dynamics. (Gary Reber)
