Ambulance 4K Ultra HD

In the action thriller "Ambulance," Will Sharp (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), desperate for money, turns to his adoptive bother Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal) for help. A career criminal, Danny instead offers him a huge score. But when their heist goes awry, the desperate brothers hijack an ambulance with a wounded cop and paramedic (Eiza Gonzalez) onboard. Will and Danny must evade a city-wide law enforcement response, keep their hostages alive, and somehow try not to kill each other, al while executiing the most insane escape L.A. has ever seen. The 2.39:1 1080p AVC 4K Ultra HD HDR10 picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, upconverted to 2160p with greater resolution and luminance, was photographed digitally in anamorphic Panavision® using the Red Komodo 6K Bayhem, Red Weapon Helium 8K Bayhem, and Red Weapon Helium 8K camera systems and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. Color fidelity is excellent with naturalness exhibited throughout. Hue shadings are nicely resolved, which enhances realism, Colors exhibit natural saturation. Flesh tones are naturally hued. HDR contrast is superb with deep solid black levels exhibited on police cars and helicopter, and revealing shadows. White levels are at times brilliant and otherwise natural as exhibited on police cars and the ambulance. Resolution is revealing of detail in facial features such as lines, pores, hair and beards. Clothing exhibits fine detail as well as in object textures, especially during closeups, which are quite frequent. Throughout, the action is captured with hand-held cameras, which intensify the action. This is an intense visual experience that delivers lots of excitement. (Gary Reber)

The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic and chaotic with fast=action imagery and intense gunfire. squealing tires on police cars, and of course, the ambulance. The chase scenes involving the ambulance and numerous police cars is intense, causing chaotic mayhem and destruction. The sounds of road mayhem are perfectly realistic. Bass extension is extremely deep and powerful with intense punch and energy in the sub-25 Hz range. Energized bass is a virtually constant sound element. Atmospherics sound realistic, Sound effects are intense and dynamic sounding, as well as directionalized and panned. Crashes and explosions are powerful. The music is fast-paced and pounding with a wide, enveloping spread throughout the soundfield. Surround energy is strong and aggressively directionalized. Dialogue is intelligible and generally well integrated spatially.

The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an extension of the music to the height layer, as well as various sound effects and atmospherics such as the ambulance siren, police sirens, panned helicopters, warehouse door opening sounds, environmental outdoor sounds, bank garage din, directional gun shots, interior ambulance ruckus and other minor effects. There are long time gaps between sounds and as such, much more could have been created. When active though, the height ayer is dimensional and enhances the ear-level foundation.

This is a non-stop action holosonic® spherical surround soundtrack that is dynamic sounding and delivers intense energy along with aggressive soundfield action. (Gary Reber)
