When bounty hunter Ian Swan (Bruce Willis) is shot and presumed dead after disappearing in Maui waters, Swan's son, Ryan (Blake Jenner), his ex-partner (Stephen Dorff), and a local detective (Praya Lundberg) set out to find his killers. After being threatened by a ruthless power broker (John Travolta), it appears Ryan and his team are out of options––until an excursion to the closely guarded island community of "Paradise City" unites them with an unforeseen ally. The 2.39:1 1080p picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, was photographed digitally and sourced from a 2K master Digital Intermediate format. The picture is sharp and clean. Color fidelity exhibits hues that are saturated with natural balance, Flesh tones are naturally hued. However, the imagery exhibits a digital capture rather than a filmic presentation. Contrast is good with deep black levels, generally good shadows, and natural white levels. At times, the contrast balance is skewed due to stylization. Resolution is excellent with fine detail exhibited throughout. Overall, the picture is satisfying with beautiful Hawaii locations but characteristic of an excessive digital footprint. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding with an active orchestral score that spans the sound stage with aggressive surround envelopment. Sound effects such as automatic gunfire sound realistic. Atmospherics also sound natural. Dialogue is clear with good intelligibility and spatial integration. Overall, this is a rather standard soundtrack with supportive aggressive surround envelopment. (Gary Reber)
