The 1.90:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally using the RED V-Raptor 8K | Red Komodo 6K, Sony CineAlta Venice 2 IMAX and Sony CineAlta Venice 2 Rialto IMAX camera systems and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. The picture looks fantastic! The imagery is bright, clear and sharp. The color palette exhibits nicely saturated hues with excellent richness and nuanced shadings. Primaries are strong and pop. Object and settings appear naturally realistic, especial the cars, the race tracks and the city locations. HDR contrast is excellent with deep, solid black levels, revealing shadows and bright white levels. Resolution is also excellent and crisp with fine detail exhibited throughout. Facial features are revealing of fine detail in complexions, skin pores, lines, beard stubble, beards and hair. Clothing and racing gear is vivid. Object texture is finely captured on the cars and race tracks and the beautiful buildings and architecture of the urban settings. During a pouring rain storm the vividness of beads of rain streaking across a windshield is amazing. This is a wonderfully colorful picture that is reference quality that should thrill home theatre enthusiasts. (Gary Reber)

The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is exceptionally dynamic sounding with strong atmospherics and of course, sound effects as in the sounds associated with racing at high speeds and the roar of the monster muscle cars as they speed down the various world-famous racetracks. The sound effects are enhanced with powerful deep bass extension to sub-25 Hz frequencies in the .1 LFE channel, providing heart-pounding excitement. The orchestral score is lively and dynamic with an extremely wide and deep soundstage that aggressively extends to the surrounds and envelops the soundfield. Surround energy is intense and directionalized. Dialogue is intelligible throughout though close body-miked or ADR produced with a rather forward presence. Announcements and racing fans singing the French anthem powerfully fill the soundfield.

The Immersive Sound element is comprised of selected segments and scene atmospherics such as outdoor ambiances, wind and fan excitement, racing announcements and sound effects such as instances of brief car movements and crashes. Surprisingly, there is hardly any sound effects during the roaring races, nor no music in the height layer. Far more was possible but not addressed.

This is an incredible ear-level holosonic® soundtrack that is dynamic sounding and a perfect home theatre reference with an incredible enveloping and dimensional soundfield. This racing movie sounds so much better and more realistic than any previous release of its kind. (Gary Reber)
