Oppenheimer 4K Ultra HD

The 2.20:1:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 4K Ultra HD HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on Kodak Vision3 film stock in IMAX, Panavision Super 70 and Super 35 using the Arriflex 435, IMAX MKIII, IMAX MKIV, IMAX MSM 9802 and Panavision Panaflex System 65 Studio camera systems and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. The 4K HDR10 master was created from a native 8K scan of the 65mm negative. There is a slight grain field that is integral to the filmic feel. There is also the shifting aspect ratio (2.20:-1.78:1), which is comfortably ignorable. The picture features vivid color and black-and-white cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema. Color fidelity is superb with rich and warm saturated hues that exhibit excellent nuanced hue shadings. Colors often pop, especially during numerous explosive imagery. Flesh tones reveal realistic complexions and tones, and naturalness. HDR contrast is excellent with deep black levels, revealing shadow delineation and naturally brilliant white levels. Resolution is fantastic with the finest detail exhibited in unbelievably crisp and sharp skin pores, lines, and hair, as well as complexions. Close-ups are especially striking down to the subtlest detail. Clothing fabrics are revealing of thread details. Object textures are rich in detail. All this enhances the cinematic realism of locations and sets. The extensive black-and-white sequences exhibit an impressive gray scale. This is an extraordinary picture that is realistic throughout –– an epic period piece of filmmaking. This is an incredible filmic experience. Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack was repurposed from the theatrical IMAX 6-Track, Datasat, DTS 70 mm and Dolby Surround 7.1 elements. Why 5.1 instead of 7.1 or Aolby Atmos or DTS:X? Despite the comparative lack of channels the soundtrack is powerfully dynamic sounding with devastating sub-25 Hz deep bass sequences of an explosive nature. Atmospherics are realistic with subtle nuanced sonics that perfectly enhance the realism of the period. Sound effects are often powerful and exciting. Foley sound effects are perfectly realistic.The orchestral score is sweeping with a wide and deep soundstage that extends aggressively to the surrounds. Surrounds are strongly aggressive and enveloping as well as directional. Dialogue is intelligible throughout though at times wanting in better spatial integration due to ADR production, as well as perfect clarity. Clarity is the norm for all sound elements. This is incredibly powerful holosonic® soundtrack that delivers impressive sonic contrasts that will challenge the most capable home theatre systems. (Gary Reber)
