Based upon Jack Finney's classic science fiction/horror novel "The Body Snatchers," "The Invasion" is about a space shuttle which crashes to Earth carrying an alien organism. Soon people are changing, becoming detached and emotionless. People like CDC Director Tucker Kaufman (Jeremy Nordham) who is investigating the crash. Meanwhile his ex-wife, psychiatrist Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman) see the same behavior in a friend of their son, and a patient claims that her husband is no longer her husband. As people all across Washington D.C. become infected and the insidious epidemic spreads, Carol must fight to protect herself and her son, who might just hold the key to stopping the escalating invasion. The 1.85:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on Kodak 35 mm film stock using the Arriflex and Panavision Panaflex Platinum camera systems and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. The picture is gorgeous with a vibrant and vivid, but natural color palette that exhibits perfectly realistic rich and warm hues. Both city exteriors and interiors are realistically presented with the normal range of colors. Flesh tones are perfectly natural with vibrant complexions. HDR contrast is excellent. Black levels are naturally deep and solid. Shadows are well delineated. White levels are brightly illuminated. Resolution is superb. Fine image detail is exhibited throughout. Facial features reveal details of skin pores, lines, beard stubble and hair. Interior details are incredibly detailed with fine material and object textures evident. Clothing fabrics are extremely detailed. This is an incredibly sharp and clear picture that establishes this edition as the definitive. Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding. Atmospherics are perfectly captured and enhance the realism of the urban setting. Sound effects are exciting and sonic shape the explosive violence. These are enhanced with intense transient bass attack and deep bass extension with .1 LFE energy. The orchestral score is quite active and dynamic with a wide and deep soundstage and an aggressive surround presence that envelops the soundfield. Surround imaging is often directionalized and panned. The mix can be very expansive, creating a stage that seems to extend well beyond the physical limitations of the room and loudspeaker positions. Fidelity is excellent. Dialogue is intelligible with good spatial integration. This is a wonderfully engaging holosonic® soundtrack with a sweeping enveloping soundfield presence, excellent atmospherics and sound effects, and dynamic fidelity. (Gary Reber)
