    In a dark corridor of New York's United Nations headquarters, Silvia Broome (Kidman) is The Interpreter who overhears a potentially explosive secret about a planned assassination attempt on a visiting foreign leader. Suddenly, Silvia's orderly, quiet life is turned upside down as she becomes a target of the conspirators. Placed under the protection of federal agent Tobin Keller (Penn), Silvia's world grows more nightmarish as Tobin digs deeper into Silvia's past and begins to question whether she is a victim...or a suspect.     Special features are the same as found on the standard-definition disc, and include an alternate ending, two minutes worth of deleted scenes, a 10-minute From Concept To Screen conversation with director Sydney Pollack, five minutes worth of Pollack's views on widescreen vs. pan-and-scan (show this to your friends who still don't get it), audio commentary by Director Sydney Pollack, an eight-minute featurette on The Ultimate Movie Set: The United Nations, and an interesting eight-minute featurette on A Day In The Life Of Interpreters.

    The H.264 AVC-encoded 2.35:1 HD DVD exhibits well-balanced colors and well-rendered details to create an enjoyable picture. Contrast can be slightly overblown, but blacks are deep and shadow delineation is good. (Danny Richelieu)

    The Dolby® Digital Plus and DTS® Digital Surround™ 5.1-channel encodings are enjoyable, with a broad front stage and good surround envelopment. The sonics can sound slightly hard, which removes from the soundtrack's naturalness. Differences between the two encodings are difficult to discern. (Danny Richelieu)

    I love to read WSR because of the straightforward, professional equipment reviews. I also LOVE the DVD reviews. As a home theatre fanatic, I want to know the technical and quality aspects of my future purchase/rental DVDs with just a brief synopsis of what the movie is about. Other home theatre publications spend way too much space reviewing the movie itself. I will make my own judgments on the merits of the movie, what I want from my magazine is some insight on how the DVD will sound and look on my system. WSR gives the reader just that. GREAT mag!
