"Flight" tells the story of Whip Whitaker (Washington), a commercial airline pilot who miraculously lands a plummeting airplane during a breathtaking sequence. But despite his heroics, Whip comes under investigation and begins what may be an even more harrowing personal decent. (Gary Reber)
Special feaures include three featurettes: "Origins Of Flight" (HD 10:29), "The Making Of Flight" (HD 11:31) and "Anatomy Of A Plane Crash" (HD 07:6); Q&A highlights (HD 14:18); and an UltraViolet digital copy.
The 1080p AVC picture appears natural throughout, with well-balanced contrast, deep blacks, and revealing shadow delineation. The color palette exhibits a warm, rich palette of saturated hues. Fleshtones are realistic and natural. Resolution is a bit soft overall, though, at times fine detail surfaces in close-ups. The impression is that of cinematic warmth, with a subtle grain structure. This is a satisfying visual experience that effectively communicates the dramatic storytelling. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack, except for the crash scene, is rather quiet, as the storytelling is dialogue focused. Atmospherics and sound effects are appropriately subtle and nuanced with segments of aggressive surround during storms. Dialogue is well executed, though, at times spatial integration is wanting. The music score is a mixture of soft piano and orchestral interludes intermixed with pop music. This is a satisfying soundtrack that effectively carries the storytelling. (Gary Reber)
