    Haunted by his past, WWII veteran and drifter Freddie Quell (Phoenix) crosses paths with a mysterious movement called The Cause, led by Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman), aka "The Master," and his wife Peggy (Adams). Their twisted relationship is the core of this film. Will Freddie be able to outrun his past? Will The Cause help or hurt him? Can this tortured, violent creature be civilized? Or is man, after all, just a dirty animal? (Gary Reber)

    Special features include "Back Beyond," a featurette with outtakes and additional scenes (HD 19:59); the "Unguided Mesage" short (SD 07:59); "Let There Be Light," John Huston's documentary about WWII veterns (SD 58:06); the theatrical trailer; eight teasers; and a digital copy.

    The 1080p AVC picture was photographed in Panavision Super 70 65 mm and cropped to 1.85:1. The imagery is cinematic throughout, with a dense filmic grain structure and saturated color palette. Fleshtones are generally natural in hue. Resolution in close-up focus are finely detailed in facial character, hair, clothing, and object texture. The film exhibits a warm visual character that communicates the tension exhibited in the imagery. (Gary Reber)

    The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is surreal and generally dialogue focused, with good spatial integration. The string orchestral score stretches across the soundstage with a deep and spatially nuanced presentation, with subtle surround presence. At times the score is weirdly rhythmic. Overall, the sound is frontal and monaural focused, with undistinguished dynamics. Still, it connects in a weird way to support the story. (Gary Reber)
