Big Bad Wolves weaves a story in which a series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: the father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings—a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder. The 2.38:1 1080p AVC picture was photographed digitally with the Arri Alexa camera system. The picture quality is precisely rendered with a crisp and finely resolved image that appears naturally hued throughout. The color palette is never exaggerated, with hues that are well balanced and natural. Fleshtones are naturally hued throughout. Contrast is nicely balanced with solid blacks and shadow delineation that is revealing, especially during the basement scene. This is a well-produced picture, with an engaging visual presence that is captivating. (Gary Reber)
The preferred Hebrew-language DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is intensified by a wonderfully dynamic orchestral music score, with deep sub-25 Hz .1 LFE enhancement, to heighten the intense segments, especially the thunder and lightening segment. Nuanced atmospherics and sound effects are perfectly executed, as well as the Foley effects. Dialogue is nicely integrated, though, with an unnatural reverbrate effect during scenes in the basement. Resolution exhibits fine detail in facial features, hair, clothing, and object texture, which heightens the sense of realism. This is, at times, an intense sonic experience, yet is effectively natural in presentation. (Gary Reber)
