"The Fast And The Furious" is loosely based on a Vibe magazine article about street clubs that race Japanese cars late at night. Vin Diesel is Domenic Toretto, the leader of a street gang that is suspected of stealing expensive electronic equipment. Brian Spillner (Walker) is an undercover rookie cop assigned to find the thieves. Posing as a racing team member, he manages to ingratiate himself with the team's leaders and even finds himself falling for Domenic's younger sister (Brewster). Eventually, his assignment and life become jeopardized when the other members begin to suspect an imposter. (Suzanne Hodges)

Special features include Picture In Picture Instant Access, a Paul Walker Public Service Announcement for safe driving, an 18-minute making-of featurette, an eight-camera stunt sequence, a three-angle drag-racing footage, a featurette of editing for the MPAA, a visual effects montage, three music videos (Ja Rule's "Furious," Caddillac Tah's "Pov City Anthem," and Saliva's "Click Click Boom"), Enhanced Viewing allows the viewer to click on an icon during the film to hear scene-specific commentary from Director Cohen, seven deleted/extended scenes with optional director commentary, a Playboy Playmate-hosted trick-your-ride segment in 20 minutes, the theatrical trailer, and a sneak peek for 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Like the MPEG-2-encoded D-VHS release, this VC-1-encoded 2.35:1 HD DVD looks superb, with impressively deep blacks, well-rendered shadow delineation, and vibrant colors. Details are resolved well, although fine textures can look slightly soft when compared to some of the best releases on this format. (Danny Richelieu)

The explosive Dolby® Digital Plus 5.1-channel soundtrack improves upon the already stellar Dolby Digital encoding of the D-VHS release, with a smoother response and slightly tighter, more impactful bass. (Danny Richelieu)
