Story Synopsis:
Robinson Crusoe On Mars is a science fiction classic based on the popular 1950’s novel from Daniel Defoe. The plot is rustic, involving a stranded astronaut who faces the perils of survival alone in a futuristic land of danger until he meets “Friday,” an alien slave. They form a bonding friendship and challenge the harsh Martian landscape to-gether. While the production design and sets tend toward artificially, the visuals impart a unique sense of wonder, especially the outdoor sequences which used Death Valley locations juxtaposed with an artificial “Martian” sky. Robinson Crusoe On Mars is a cult classic, nostogically noteworthy.
LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been recomposed at 2.20:1. Images are very sharp and detailed. Contrast is excellent and the saturated color is vivid. Except for some minor video artifacts the picture is perfect. The sound is mono.

The excellent supplemental section contains illustrated excerpts from Ib Melchior’s original screenplay, the film’s production history, and a wonderful collection of commentary by Byron Haskin, and Paul Mantee and others.
