Story Synopsis:
Bitter Moon, based upon the novel by Pascal Bruckner, is the perverse story of sensuality, love, cruelty and obsession told aboard an ocean liner bound for India. Nigel and Fiona, a very proper English couple played by Hugh Grant and Kristen Scott-Thomas, are hoping to rekindle the romance in their marriage. While on board they meet Oscar (Peter Coyote) and his sexy wife Mimi (Emmanuelle Singer). Nigel becomes fascinated with Mimi and when Oscar, a paraplegic, wants to tell their story, he becomes “the listener I’ve been looking for.” The depths of passion, self-destruction and cruelty of this relationship, told in flashbacks, have never before been imagined by Nigel, who becomes obsessed with the story and whose affected behavior endangers his own marriage.
LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been matted at 1.85:1. The sharp, artifact-free picture has a natural film look with vivid color, good contrast, and accurate fleshtones. Blacks are deep and shadows are detailed. Just a slight glimpse of grain is visible in the dark scenes.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The excellent soundtrack is effectively spatial with an enveloping and aggressive surround , particularly contributed to by the great music score. Bass effects are punctuated with the opening ship’s fog horn.
