WSR Narrative Review |

Story Synopsis:
Ingmar Bergman’s Cries and Whispers is beautifully photographed in color—unlike most of Bergman’s best known films. It won an Academy Award® for cinematographer Sven Nykvist. The story is a character study of three sisters, one of whom is dying of cancer. The dying sister maintains a sense of gentleness and grace through her unbearable pain while the other two, who have come to comfort her, bicker and manipulate. They put their selfishness before empathy. The result is a thought provoking, unsettling tale of life and death as told by the legendary director through pictures of brilliant quality.
LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is matted at 1.68:1 and transferred from a 35mm color dupe negative. Picture quality is somewhat wanting and fleshtones are inconsistent. Detail is good but minor artifacts and noise are throughout.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is undistinguished mono with Swedish and dubbed-in English versions.
