Story Synopsis:
Outrageous comedy and disturbing drama intersect in Woody Allen’s Crimes And Misdemeanors. When ophthalmologist Judah Rosenthal (Martin Landau in an Oscar®-nominated role) is threatened with ruin by his mistress (Anjelica Huston) when he will not leave his wife (Claire Bloom), he considers the ultimate solution to his problem—murder. Meanwhile, documentary filmmaker Clifford Stern (Woody Allen), is faced with another moral dilemma—selling out. As a director, Allen compares the choices both men make, weaving the parallel story lines to brilliantly combine a humorous portrait of Manhattan life with harrowing drama.
LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 picture exhibits slightly yellow overtones with otherwise generally natural color fidelity and deep oversaturated blacks. The few exterior scenes look more natural than the “plugged-up” interiors. Images are not always sharp and shadow detail is dark and undefined. Noise and artifacts are apparent, especially in the darker scenes.

Woody Allen’s soundtrack, as usual, is undistinguished monaural, though generally well recorded.
