Story Synopsis:
In 1962, when hairstyles were high and mighty, the teenagers of Baltimore had dreams of dancing on the Corny Collins Show. John Waters’ Hairspray takes a humorous look at Tracy Turnblad’s (Ricki Lake) struggle to make it on the show and beat the reigning dance princess Amber Von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick). Tracy has all the right moves, huge hair and a big grin. But Tracy’s one flaw—her weight—is what Amber, and her evil parents (Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry) use to try to bring her down. But with the help of her own parents (Divine and Jerry Stiller) and her interracial friends, Tracy manages to take the crown.
LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 picture is extremely and obnoxiously colorful, exhibiting natural fleshtones and deep blacks. Interior images look slightly plugged up, however. Images, otherwise, are generally sharp and detailed with good contrast and shadow detail. Only the slightest noise and artifacts are apparent.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack features a 50s/60s rock and roll score that sounds very bright. The music dominates while the dialogue collapses with the rest of the production.
