Story Synopsis:
Giant is the spectacular epic based on the novel by Edna Ferber that tells the tale of greed, power and lust among two generations of cattle and oil men and their women during the glory days of Texas. George Stevens won a Best Director Oscar® and James Dean stars in his last film.
LaserDisc Picture:
The windowboxed 1.70:1 picture is dated and inconsistent, but occasionally is nicely rendered. Colors are solid and fully, if not over saturated, with generally natural fleshtones, and deep, undefined blacks. Contrast is good, and shadow delineation sometimes exhibits good visual information in the darker scenes. Images are inconsistently sharp, with some scenes excessively noisy with artifacts and enhanced edges. The entire picture is wanting in better clarity and openness.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Surround soundtrack sounds constricted and pulled toward center. Fidelity is mostly restricted to a midrange presence with often shrill and distorted quality. The almost continuous music score largely defines the stereo and surround envelopment. Otherwise, the direction is monaural with forward, poorly integrated dialogue.
