WSR Narrative Review |

Story Synopsis:
Based on the book “Lost Moon” by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger, Apollo 13 is an astonishing space epic that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit. This is the true story of a routine space flight gone wrong in 1970. Three astronauts—Jim Lovell (Hanks), Fred Haise (Paxton) and Jack Sweigert (Bacon)—face a desperate fight for their lives when an oxygen tank explodes over 200,000 miles from Earth. While they labor frantically in the space capsule, the NASA Mission Control Center ground crew races against the odds to get these brave men back safely.
LaserDisc Picture:
The picture quality is exceptionally natural with superb detail and sharpness, excellent contrast and shadow delineation. Color fidelity is exemplary with natural fleshtones, vivid colors, and deep, solid blacks. The picture is solid with no noise or artifacts. The aspect ratio matches the theatrical 2.35:1 frame for a perfect THX quality assured presentation.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The surrounds on this soundtrack are for the most part subtle, except for the powerful shuttle blastoff scene that energizes the entire soundfield with response down to below 25Hz. Dialogue is noticeably muffled and looped out of place with the control room ambience. There’s also a terrifically well recorded music score.
